romanzolotarev.com is a Fediverse instance that uses the ActivityPub protocol. In other words, users at this host can communicate with people that use software like Mastodon, Pleroma, Friendica, etc. all around the world.
This server runs the snac software and there is no automatic sign-up process.
My 2027 UNIX wishlist.
-NetBSD gets ZFS on root, and in the installer.
-NetBSD gets FreeBSD's jails, including VNET support.
<or>
-FreeBSD fully and finally declares a no AI policy.
As much as I like OpenBSD, neither of those things have ANY chance of making it into their source.
Also, has anyone forked a slop free tmux, yet?

Today I tried to install #NetBSD 11 on an old Acer E15 laptop that I had been using as a #Debian CLI-only system.
The install was a little dicey. First one failed, but the second time I was able to go all the way through and configure WiFi on the Edimax N150 USB. I kept getting errors in the console about the BIOS (likely related to the battery, which is pretty dodgy).
X started but really didn't run. I could try messing with it, but I'll probably go to #OpenBSD next.
Doing some useless tinkering on Saturday: #OpenBSD running #CDE #Librewolf #VLC on the #ThinkCentre M715q. It's mechanical SATA disk sucks a bit when it comes to speed but this machine is pretty nice overall.
boostedI think it's about time for some #OpenBSD #80HYPE

blargh. Shot waaaay too much time trying to diagnose an httpd(8) + acme-client(1) issue on a recent #OpenBSD install.
I pointed acme-client at the Let's Encrypt testing/dev endpoint, got the certs/chain/keys in the right place, reloaded httpd, and refreshed. Cert-chain looked like what I expected, rolling up to the (unrecognized) root and throwing Unknown CA warnings.
So I repointed my acme-client.conf file at the *production* Let's Encrypt endpoint, re-issued the acme-client command to re-fetch them, reloaded httpd, and refreshed the browser. but still got the same errors. The chain kept showing the old dev-signing certs, not the valid ones.
Apparently acme-client only (re)downloads certs if they're coming up on needing renewal. So acme-client was running, seeing that my bad-certs were sufficiently recent, and just not requesting/writing updated fullchain/key files.
Deleted the bogus testing certs, re-ran acme-client, reloaded httpd, and πͺ everything worked fine. π
Hopefully this saves someone else the trouble.
#OpenBSD 8.0 will be HUGE. I mean not in size but the amount of new features added since 7.9 to - current is incredible.

I really like Simon Harrison's series of blog posts about using #GameOfTrees for simple version control tasks: https://simonh.uk/tags/got/index.html
My own use cases are more complicated than Simon's but it is making me happy to see confirmation of how the UI designed for working on #OpenBSD and related projects is working very well for people with fairly simple needs. That was one of my goals from the very beginning and is a significant differentiator from #Git.

then i discovered that openbsd doesn't support audio over hdmi and my openbsd server doesn't have analog audio output, obviously.
my tv had been connected to a stereo amplifier anyway, so my setup is actually even better now: a dedicated usb dac connected directly to the amplifier.

We really appreciate the work done on the TLS settings in relayd(8) and httpd(8).
It makes it even easier to get a tried and tested secure connection to your favorite OS and service!
"Both relayd(8) and httpd(8) now have the "secure" list of allowed crypto methods for HTTPS, which include TLSv1.3 and the TLSv1.2 AEAD cipher suites.
The previous list was "HIGH:!aNULL" which contain non-perfect-forward-security methods and this change may cause old clients to not be able to connect."

Hat Tip to @sizeofvoid and others!
Can you guess when I activated ActivityPub relays on this #GoToSocial instance? BTW, although running on #OpenBSD, cpu and memory usage are still chilling.
For $REASONS, I took my (old) #Lenovo Ideapad S10 out of the box and installed
#OpenBSD 7.9/i386 on it. Turns out... it installs and runs. But the only graphical Web browser I could use is Dillo; which can display DuckDuckGo but not Phanpy or my Bank User Portal. So I don't expect to go very far there. Also, even with hw.perfpolicy set to auto, the fan never stops blowing and making some annoying noise (although CPU is 40 degC).
Maybe I'll try some i386 Linux distro there to see what happens. Maybe it'll go back to its box until the Zombie Apocalypse and the need for 2W TDP CPU happen. Or until I need a 1024x600 10" tmux terminal... I could actually take it on the road where the P14 is too big and the iPhone is a bit too small...
And BTW, in case whatever, the dmesg is here https://dmesgd.nycbug.org/dmesgd?do=view&id=9039 :)
PS: While writing this post, the fan finally stopped blowing. Not sure why as temperature is still 40 degC. Anyway.

it detects the intel hd audio and attaches azalia(4), but only the internal realtek alc257 codec is found.
there is no hdmi audio codec, no audio1, and mixerctl -a only shows the internal speaker/headphone outputs. the external display works over hdmi, but there is no way to select hdmi audio because no hdmi audio device is detected.
is hdmi audio expected to work with openbsd 7.9? if it should work, are there any additional diagnostics steps i should try?
similar to this setup, but with a trackpad not a mouse...
any ideas?
now i'm looking for m.2 modules (lte/5g and wifi ap) compatible with #openbsd. any recommendations?
