Writen using #FreeBSD on #thinkpad t460

What's good:
* No system load at all! All feels logical and snappy
* Good pkg system, I like the tips after package install
* Solid installer, base image is only 500MB (~150MB compressed)

What's bad:
* Screen brightness control does not work out of the box
* Reading SD cards can be pain due poor exfat and SD-slot support
* Takes significantly longer to boot

Neutral:
* WiFi seems more stable, but I still accidentally need to restart networking
* MATE style comes very basic, looks good after installing theme
* No(?) SafeEyes package, WorkRave is way more annoying
* unfortunately, @delta chat is not in packages due electron toolchain

Also; I went trough hell updating lenovo #firmware, which is only
supported on wingdows (g intended) so I have experience to compare.

Sadly, lenovo does not support firmware updates for my laptop anymore.
Interestingly #IntelME firmware for t460s laptop seems to work.

Output of the 'pfetch' command displaying system information.

Wrote new article — about how to use some ThinkPad-specific keys with FreeBSD. Most of the Fn-keys and volume control separate keys could be uses "as is" — the OS passes the proper and well-known keycodes (like XF86audioMute, etc) to the X server. But some keys needs some "black magic" (devd and acpi_ibm kernel module).

I have a strong urge to get a #ThinkPad X230 and install #OpenBSD.

I might have been on Fedi for too long.

• firefox is slower (at speedometer 3.1: 6.99-7.49 vs 7.96-8.18)
• ungoogled-chromium crashes

  GPU process isn't usable
  

• trackpad: ok (got fixed?)
• trackpoint: not ok (still not working)

the fan still kicks in under the load, but at least when cpu frequency is low, the fan is off

notes: when i re-run the tests scores are changing (just slightly); at some point openbsd frozen during vimb test (just once, couldn't reproduce, worked well after reboot)

on a positive note i only need to configure it once for a new laptop and then i can reinstall everything on exactly the same or similar thinkpad in just a few minutes :)

• audio(ok)
• battery(ok)
• display port(ok)
• ethernet(ok)
• ssd(ok)
• trackpad(ok)
• trackpoint(ok)
• usb(ok)
• video(ok)
• wireless(ok) --- after fw_update
• hibernation(ok)
• suspend/resume(ok)
• bluetooth(no)

• fingerprint(not tested)
• microphone(not tested)
• webcam(not tested)

everything is okay, but even while idle the fan is at ~2000 rpm and temperature is about +40ºC...

after silent macbook air m1 it's just too noisy :)

• minimal cpu freq (400 mhz)
• minimal backlight (level 1)
• wifi on, but inactive
• bluetooth off
• xenodm on, but inactive (no windows open)
• only default services running
• single shell script running (calling apm every minute and writing a few lines into to a file)
• nothing else connected (no exteral displays, no usb, no ethernet)

i don't know what happened recently, but all new thinkpads got that camera bump...

#thinkpad classic look is gone completely

if it's not working on #openbsd, then will switch back to good old x1 gen 5 :)

let me know if you can recommend anything else.
